PH assures safety of ASEAN delegates

THE Philippine government on Friday assured the security of local and foreign delegates and media practitioners covering the 50th ASEAN foreign ministers meeting and related meetings from Aug. 2-8, 2017 in Manila.
Concerns about the security of those attending the event have been raised following reports that members of terrorist groups are now in Metro Manila, especially as military operations against ISIS-connected Maute Group continues in Marawi City in Mindanao.
“We’re assured by NCRPO (National Capital Region Police Office) (chief) Gen. (Oscar) Albayalde that there are enough security measures around the PICC area, particularly Conrad, PICC and Sofitel,” PCOO Assistant Secretary Kris Ablan told journalists.
Events for the 50th ASEAN foreign ministers meeting are being held in Philippine International Convention Center (PICC) and Sofitel Philippine Manila in the City of Manila while the media center is housed in Conrad Hotel in Pasay City.
“Even before (the) Marawi (City fighting) we already had an agreement with the Philippine National Police on security measures surrounding Conrad (Hotel),” Ablan said.
The PCOO official declined to the number of policemen stationed in these venues and said that organizers did not ask for additional police personnel.
“Any additional security from the PNP is from their own initiative,” he said.
“There should be no concerns for those attending the ASEAN meetings for security. We are being protected by the Philippine National Police,” he concluded.
